Cute: first appeared in the dictionary in 1731. Originally, it was used as a slang term for acute. Meaning keenly perceptive or discerning, shrewd. Slowly, people began to substitute it for the word acuteness or “pretty, fetching.” By 1838, the word cute was being used to describe “gals.”
